900MHz ISM Band Regulatory Changes & Concerns

The 900 MHz band is a critical part of the wireless landscape, supporting essential services for utilities and other industries through both licensed and unlicensed spectrum. The 902-928 MHz Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) band along with licensed Multiple Address Systems (MAS) are heavily leveraged by utilities nationwide for systems that manage and protect the power grid. As more devices are added daily, combined with a recent proposal at the FCC to realign the band, concerns have risen on the long-term viability of this finite block of spectrum and what role ISM and MAS should play in an operator's overall telecom strategy.

This presentation will provide an education on the 900MHz band and the proposed changes, will highlight the potential impact on one Utility's network strategy, and will present data gathered in the field on the current state of 900MHz.
