Abstract: Fiber Through the Grid - Enabling the Future of Utility Communications As utilities face increasing demands for grid automation, reliability, and control, communication infrastructure has become foundational to grid modernization. This presentation explores how fiber optic technologies enable high-performance, scalable, and secure communication networks for reliable grid automation and control. The session begins with an overview of industry challenges and the growing need for intelligent grid devices-from smart meters and fault indicators to microgrid controllers and dynamic line rating systems. It then examines varying cable and connectivity solutions available to support transmission and distribution networks, offering robust connectivity from the Energy Control Center down to the grid devices. Attendees will gain insights into fiber deployment strategies, substation connectivity options, and network topologies that support redundancy and scalability. The presentation also highlights how fiber enables migration from legacy TDM systems to modern IP/MPLS-based architectures, empowering utilities to build mission-critical, end-to-end communication networks.
Key Takeaways: • Understand the role of fiber in supporting intelligent grid devices and automation. • Learn about fiber deployment options across transmission, distribution, and substations. • Explore substation connectivity configurations including patch, splice, and hybrid panels. • Discover network topology strategies for interconnecting substations with resilience.
