Roadmap for Real-time Data Communications Infrastructure

CPS Energy Vision 2027 strategic objectives embrace an operational revolution enabled by technology to deliver both value and efficiency. Real-time data communication is a foundational capability critical to modern utility that enables this operational revolution. Fiber provides a communication backbone characterized by speed, efficiency and resiliency. A wireless field area network enables communications across the utility's "last mile". Distribution automation and real-time metering require low latency communication for a high volume of data across that "last mile". Our Grid Modernization strategy anticipates significant investments in distribution automation and real-time metering.



This presentation is focused on the CPS Energy roadmap that takes a comprehensive approach to modernizing its communications infrastructure to support real-time data communication. We will discuss how CPS Energy is modernizing both its fiber infrastructure as well as its field area network. Our discussion of the field area network will include our strategy for LTE in support of our real-time data communications requirements.
